Judge's comment: Interesting association of themes, the verse and the painting. In this haiga, the artist seems to be not sure about the depiction of the butterfly, the hands of the lion, and use of thin grey ink in the body of lion. The little tray at the bottom is not necessary. One thing about the use of brush and ink in oriental manner is that the artist needs to be a good writer of kanji and hiragana charactors. There are certain basic ways of writing in brush, and they are applied to paintings, too. I wish that all the people who try the traditional brush and ink drawing first learn the basics of kanji and hiragana writing. This will deffinitely improve the quality of artworks. |
